Breast Cancer Awareness Month: How Your Pharmacist Can Support You

Breast Cancer Awareness Month means pink ribbons on storefronts all over Mount Pleasant and Charleston this October. What it doesn't come with is a guide to the part nobody talks about at the register: what happens to your medication list once treatment starts. That's where we come in. Whether you're newly diagnosed, mid-treatment, in recovery, or supporting someone who is, your local pharmacist is one of the most accessible resources you have.

Why awareness month matters, beyond the ribbon

Breast cancer touches about one in eight women over a lifetime, and increasingly, men as well. Awareness month exists to keep screening and early detection top of mind, but it's also a good moment to think about the full support system around a diagnosis, including the pharmacy team that helps manage day-to-day treatment realities.

Where your pharmacist fits into the picture

Cancer treatment often means juggling several medications at once: the treatment itself, plus medications for side effects like nausea, pain, or fatigue, on top of whatever you were already taking. Your pharmacist is trained to spot interactions between all of these, flag timing conflicts, and help you understand what to expect. We work alongside your oncology team, not in place of it, to make sure nothing falls through the cracks.

Managing medications during treatment

A few ways our pharmacists can help:

  • Reviewing your full medication list for interactions, including over-the-counter drugs and supplements

  • Helping you understand side effects and what's normal versus what's worth a call to your doctor

  • Coordinating refill timing so treatment isn't interrupted

  • Answering questions about compounded options when a standard dose or form doesn't work for you

Questions worth asking at the counter

Patients often aren't sure what's okay to ask a pharmacist. Here are a few good ones:

  • Will this new prescription interact with anything I'm already taking?

  • Is there a version of this medication that's easier on my stomach?

  • Can we time my refills so I don't run out mid-treatment?

None of these are too small to ask.

Supporting someone you love

If you're caring for someone going through treatment, you can lean on us too. We're happy to help you track a loved one's medication schedule, understand what a new prescription is for, or just answer questions when things feel overwhelming.
