Frequently asked questions
The best time to get your flu shot is early fall, ideally by the end of October, so your body has time to build protection before the season peaks. At Phoenix Pharmacy in Mount Pleasant, you can walk in and get vaccinated, with no appointment needed. Here is who should get one, when, and what to expect, so you can plan for the whole family.
When to get your flu shot
Early fall is the sweet spot. A flu shot takes about two weeks to reach full protection, so getting it in early October through November means you are covered before flu activity climbs. We do not recommend getting it in August or September like the chain pharmacies push which incentivize their pharmacist on how many flu vaccines can be given out. Getting vaccinated in October ensures continued immunity during our peak flu season often beginning after Thanksgiving and continuing into the new year with the average immunity coverage lasting approximately 6 months. The CDC recommends being vaccinated by the end of October in most years. If you miss that window, it is still worth getting, because flu season can run into the spring.
Who should get one
The CDC recommends a flu vaccine every year for almost everyone six months and older. It matters most for people at higher risk of complications, including adults sixty-five and older, young children, people who are pregnant, and anyone with a chronic condition such as asthma, diabetes, or heart disease. If you are not sure whether it is right for you, our pharmacists can talk it through based on your health and history.
Why the timing matters
Getting vaccinated early does two things. It protects you before the season peaks, and it protects the people around you, including family members who are more vulnerable, like young children and older relatives. In a household heading into a busy fall, that head start adds up. Waiting until you are already surrounded by flu is a step behind.
What to expect at Phoenix
It is quick and straightforward. Walk in when it suits you, and one of our pharmacists takes care of you. If you have questions about your options, timing, or which vaccines make sense together, just ask. We would rather spend a minute getting it right than have you guess.
Getting it done alongside your fall to-do list
Fall is a season of overlapping errands, so it helps to combine them. If someone at home is already feeling under the weather, ask us about rapid testing for strep, the flu, and RSV, so you can sort out symptoms and vaccines in the same trip.
Pharmacist Q&A
When can I get my flu shot at Phoenix?
Starting October 1, walk in anytime, no appointment needed. Our pharmacists are happy to talk through timing or which vaccines make sense together. Why does Phoenix wait until October 1 instead of offering flu shots now?
Flu shot protection holds strongest for about six months, then starts to fade. Flu activity in the Lowcountry typically climbs after Thanksgiving and runs into the new year. If you get vaccinated too early, in August or early September, your protection can wear off right when you need it most. Waiting until October 1 lines your protection up with peak season instead, and still falls within the CDC's recommended window of being vaccinated by the end of October.Isn't earlier better, so I don't forget?
Not when it comes to flu shots specifically. Earlier isn't better here, it's just earlier. The timing is what protects you, not how soon you get it done. Are there exceptions?
Yes. If you're pregnant, work somewhere you can't easily reschedule (school, healthcare setting), or your doctor has told you to get it earlier for a specific reason, go ahead. Talk to our pharmacists or your physician about what's right for you. What should I expect at Phoenix?
